Study skills that work for healthcare students

Evidence-informed habits β€” spaced practice, self-testing, and verbalizing procedures β€” adapted to a CNA program.

Short, frequent sessions beat marathons

Twenty to thirty focused minutes most days builds stronger memory than one long weekend session. Healthcare knowledge is cumulative β€” infection control concepts return in every skill you learn later.

Pick a consistent time you can protect. Consistency matters more than duration.

Test yourself before you feel ready

Rereading notes feels productive but fades fast. Answering questions β€” even getting them wrong β€” is what strengthens recall. That is why NEXA's Tutor Mode asks you a question after every concept.

Treat every wrong answer as a gift: it shows you precisely what to review while there is still time.

Say procedures out loud

CNA skills are sequences. Verbalizing each step β€” β€œfirst I wash my hands, then I introduce myself…” β€” engages memory differently than silent reading, and it mirrors how skills are actually evaluated.

NEXA's Skills Practice mode is built around this: you talk through a skill, and NEXA follows along against the approved checklist.

Plan around your weak areas, not your favorites

It is human to re-study what you already know β€” it feels good. Growth lives in the uncomfortable topics. NEXA tracks your weak domains and builds your study plan around them.

If you have an exam date, tell NEXA. Your plan will pace topics so nothing important is crammed into the final week.

Check your understanding

1. Which study pattern builds the strongest long-term memory?
2. Why does NEXA ask you a question after each concept in Tutor Mode?
3. What is the benefit of verbalizing a skill's steps out loud?
